Chapter 16

“What do you mean he’s failing health class?” Smitty asked the new teacher at Imminence High School.

“He’s failing health class,” she responded, pushing her cat-eye glasses up her nose.

“How does anyone fail health class?” Wesson asked, arms crossed, clearly not believing the teacher.

“By only caring about football,” she said snidely.

“That’s BS and you know it. He’s acing calculus. Why would he be failing health?” Smitty asked.

She shrugged in response.

Ms. Charlotte Jefferson was a new teacher at Imminence High this year and he’d been fighting with her all season over his players’ grades. Smitty wasn’t the kind of coach who expected teachers to change grades for his players. This wasn’t Texas after all. But a fair number of his sophomores and juniors were having problems with her health class. Unfortunately for the game tonight, his star quarterback was the one having the problem.

“Listen, lady, I’ve been watching their grades all season long. He can’t just now be failing fucking health.”

“Don’t you ‘listen lady’ me and do not curse inside my class! You two may be cops, but you can’t just come into my classroom and interrogate me.” She was pissed. “He failed a test yesterday and that brought him down to a 59 percent.”

“What was the test on?” Wesson asked.

“The reproductive system.”

Smitty laughed. Of course it was. “Lady, that kid knows a lot about the reproductive system. I know, because he doesn’t have a dad at home and I made sure I told him everything he needs to know and then I handed him a box of condoms.”

Wesson nodded in agreement. He’d been involved in the condom talk.

“My word, you’re so unprofessional.” She shook her head, incredulous.

“Not a teacher here, Ms. Jefferson. I’m just the coach and the only male figure in some of these kids’ lives. Steele Rosen is a good kid. A smart kid. Like I said, he’s acing calculus. But that doesn’t mean shit to him. The only thing meaningful he has is football. You keep him from this game tonight, and he’ll carry that disappointment with him for the rest of his life.”

She huffed and blew her red hair out of her face. She was really pretty. Not as pretty as Anne, but he imagined one of his colleagues was bound to make a play for her at some point. He didn’t see a ring, so he wouldn’t be surprised. Maybe she was a little too old for Dillon or Cole, but then again, those two didn’t seem too discerning when it came to women. Hell, maybe they’d already sought her out.

“Game is tonight?”

“It’s Friday. Do you not pay attention to what’s going on in this town?”

“You’re a jerk. You need something from me. Be nicer.”

Smitty just stared at her.

Wesson looked to him. “She has a point, dude. You’re kinda being a jackhawk.”

Smitty shook his head. Wesson was right and they needed their quarterback.

“Look, Ms. Jefferson, I really can’t believe that he’s failing your class. He’s smart as hell. But the kid listens to me. If
